OBD2 Scanner

OBD2 Scanner tool works with Every Model

What is the reason for having the above setup for you? Mainly, you now have a powerful tool to analyze your car’s OBD data yourself, better even than the specialized scanning tools only dealerships and big shops had in the distant past. With your own setup, if your Service Engine Soon ( SES ) light comes on you can look at detailed OBD2 data for yourself to see what trouble codes have been set and the conditions they were set under, possibly saving you money in repair costs by knowing what is or isn't wrong with your car.

This site is the premier OBD2 ( a.k.a. OBD2 ) trouble codes resource site. Instead of just giving you a cryptic description of what a trouble code means, we offer a lot more information on trouble codes: troubleshooting tips, symptoms, and possible solutions. We strive to give you the most troubleshooting information as possible, in one site. We also feature car repair forums, where you can ask questions, totally free.

Diagnostic tool line offers the most powerful, affordable and simplest method to access today’s complex OBD2 systems. For many, it is quite interesting to be able to see your car's sensor systems working in real time, and even having the potential to upgrade performance through PROM reprogramming of your car’s ECM/PCM (not for the beginner).

Let's look at the OBD2 Scanner tool first, since we sell low cost OBD-II scan tools. It will probably be the only thing you will need to buy to do your own diagnostics and clear your trouble codes, which turns off the check engine light.

If you have a newer laptop that does not have the 9 pin serial RS-232 interface built in and has a USB only interface, order the OBD2 Scanner with USB interface. You can use our serial version OBD2 Scanner tool on a USB only PC by adding a USB to Serial converter.

Find great deals for OBD2 Bluetooth in Other Diagnostic Service Tools. Then plug the provided serial or USB cable into the other end of the OBD2 unit and then the 9 pin RS-232 serial port or usb connector into your laptop. Have your PC turned on and start whatever data collection software you have downloaded, and turn the car key forward to start the communication between your cars ECU/PCM and the PC. You can view your cars sensor data, read diagnostic trouble codes if any are set, and clear the diagnostic trouble codes.

Car performance / diagnostics tool and scanner that uses an OBD2 Bluetooth adapter to connect to your OBD2 engine management / ECU. Some packages provide freeze frame data, which is all the cars sensor data at the time a particular trouble code was set. Some packages allow data logging for viewing later on with extensive color graphing capabilities. Other packages have built in dynamometer calculations so you can in effect have your own chassis dyno.

The last item needed is the diagnostic software that will run on your PC or handheld to collect and record the data from your OBD-II system. There are a number of excellent OBD Software packages available, with some of them being free and others giving you a trial or demo mode.

Screen shots and links to each website are provided below for a few of the software packages we have tested and work well with the OBD Software scan tool. We're not endorsing one scanning package over another, as they all have their place and will provide critical data. Below are screen shots of some of the software packages.

There are many more screens to all of these packages; we've just included a few for viewing here. You can click on the image to get a larger view, and clicking on the title link below the picture will take you to the manufacturer’s website for each of these OBD-II packages. We provide a software CD with all OBD Software units.

The OBD Software scan tool is built using the ELM327 processor chip, for which many software packages have been written. This chip is used by a number of manufacturers and as time goes on, more and more software packages will be developed for it. This will ensure a variety of packages readily available to everyone, with more and better features in future versions. The OBD2 scan tool is able to operate at 2 different communication speeds that are user selectable, to insure compatibility with existing and future software packages.

Chip Tuning

Chip Tuning - Introducing The New Car Care Guide

OBD 2007 works with any Elm327 chipped scan tool or any scan tool powered by a chip that fully emulates all the AT commands of the Elm327 chip. There are many manufacturers of Elm327 chipped scan tools, so theoretically we support any scan tool powered by an Elm327 chip. Yes, Chip Tuning TOAD Software can tune any car brand/year/model.

However, we directly support the scan tools you see on our main page, because these companies have proved to both reliable and supportive. We are confident in recommending any of these scan tools because we have observed the quality of the products and can vouch that these scan tools are all made to the highest standards. We have also extensively tested each of these products with OBD 2007.

We have created a table of features comparing each of the scan tools we directly support. If you are new to OBDII scan tools or even an experienced user considering an additional scan tool, we hope the following table will highlight the various features of each scan tool to assist in your decision making.

The first two features are primarily aimed at the high speed CAN protocol, the protocol used by all new vehicles manufactured since 2008. When the CAN protocol was first introduced in vehicles during 2004/05, many Elm327 chipped scan tools suffered from BUFFER FULL messages, as a result of the high speed CAN networks of the vehicle over running the small internal buffer of the Elm327 chip. This is known as ChipTuning. Basically all you're doing is modifying cars behavior to how you want it to run or operate.

The OBD Pro scan tool, overcame this limitation with its unique double buffer design, so that BUFFER FULL messages were eliminated even at low speed baud rates. However the truth is — Chip Tuning is only recommended if you have previous chip tuning experience or time to learn it.

However, why use slow baud rates (9600 and 38,400 baud), when a USB port is capable of speeds of up to 2.0Mbits. The OBDPro scan tool in conjunction with OBD 2007 can exploit the very high speed baud rates of the OBDPro scan tool up to 4 times faster than the current Elm327 v1.3 chip. If you are seeking high speed performance, then the combination of OBDPro and OBD 2007 is the obvious choice.

This feature of OBDPro is truly unique. OBDPro is the only Elm327 type scan tool, which is remotely upgradable. Your scan tool investment is protected, because when any new firmware release is introduced, you have the ability to upgrade your scan tool, by running a free upgrade program from OBDPros, while your OBDPro scan tool is connected to your computer.

Within a couple of seconds, your firmware is upgraded to the latest version, so your scan tool is always current. If you want to learn ECU programming, there are hundreds of tutorials online that'll teach you just by Googling: ECU ChipTuning (or) ECU programming.

To do the same thing with any other Elm327 chipped scan tool requires purchasing a new chip, waiting days or weeks for delivery, dismantling/assembling your scan tool, removing the old chip and replacing with the new chip. Removing and replacing the 28 pin Elm327 chip is not for the faint hearted. Just don’t break or bend one of those 28 pins.

TOAD Car Tuning software will also point you to some excellent programming resources online, to get you started, or improve your existing skills. OBDKey v1.3 is a brand new design from KBM Systems. It is an extremely compact design (64x45x24mm) about the size of a matchbox and is available in either USB or Bluetooth configurations. OBDKey maybe small, but it is very big on performance. It is easily the fastest scan tool we have ever tested.

Here's a Summary of How to Car Tuning for a car:

STEP 1:

Plug tuner kit cable into car. Load it's software. Turn on car ignition. Press "Download Data" inside software. You now have your cars data on your computer as a file.

STEP 2:

Open up TOAD ECU editor software. And open up the file you downloaded from vehicle in Step 1 above.

STEP 3:

Make changes to the file.

Example: Find and change numbers that correspond to: torque, BHP, RPM to gear change ratio, etc.

STEP 4:

Save the file.

STEP 5:

Go back to tuner kit software, open the file, and press "Upload to Car".

By doing a successful tune — you've just saved yourself thousands of dollars on doing custom tune at a car shop. Including saving on future additional fuel costs and unnecessary brake-down repairs.

OBDKey v1.3 Bluetooth paired with a Smartphone running our OBD 2007 for Pocket PC is an ideal combination for any workshop manager who may be required to test multiple vehicles quickly to determine workshop priorities.

Slip it out of your pocket, plug it directly into the OBDII port and complete a test in seconds, absolutely no cables required. Here's additional High-End Professional Chip Tuning Kits for dedicated Car Tuning Shops

The Elm327 chip has evolved from the earlier Elm32x series of chips. As a software developer, I always think that maybe the Elm chip has reached the end of its useful life, but the clever engineers at Elm Electronics always continue to amaze me with the innovations they keep making to this chip. The v1.3 was no exception with the improvements they made for the CAN protocol. For the full description of all the details, see our Latest News page.

ELM327

Elm327 command set for compatibility with existing TOAD Elm327 software applications

A scan tool is a must for automotive diagnostic work today. When your Check Engine Light is on, you have to access the vehicle's onboard diagnostics with a code reader, scan tool or scanner software to find out what's wrong. A scan tool allows you to read fault codes and other diagnostic information.

A code reader can also clear codes to turn off the Check Engine light. Some code readers can also display the "ready" status of various OBD II monitors (ready means the monitor has completed its self-check process). But a code reader is NOT a scan tool because it only reads and clears codes. It does NOT display any sensor data or other system operating information. To read sensor and other system data, you need some type of scan tool or scanner software.

See what your car is doing in real-time

TOAD software allow you to "hack" your car's performance, optimize fuel consumption, perform live diagnostics, tune the ECU chip, and fix common problems via it's OBD diagnostic system. It comes with cable/software... everything you need to get started!

The Elm327 is a programmed microcontroller produced by TOAD software for translating the on-board diagnostics (OBD) interface found in most modern cars. The Elm327 command protocol is one of the most popular PC-to-OBD interface standards and is also implemented by other vendors.

Tune cars performance

Elm327 is one of a family of OBD translators from TOAD software. Other variants implement only a subset of the OBD protocols.

In recent years, various vendors have developed software that allows an inexpensive Palm Pilot, Windows CE-based personal digital assistant (PDA), Pocket PC, tablet PC or even a smart cell phone to function as a scan tool. The sophistication of the software varies greatly as does its usefulness as a Car Diagnostic Tool.
With import vehicles, coverage continues to be a major issue for some European makes. Until the arrival of OBD II, many imports lacked the ability to display sensor data or other Car Diagnostic Tool information through a scan tool. Many of the pre-OBD II Asian imports provide fault codes at the ECM with LEDs or have other flash codes so you do not need a scan tool for diagnostics. But on 1996 and newer vehicles, a scan tool has become mandatory.

For advanced diagnostics on today's vehicles, a full feature scan tool is an absolute must. Scan tools for do-it-yourselfers can display sensor values and system data, but DIY scan tools cannot perform various system self-tests such as checking the operation of the fuel pump, cooling fan(s), idle speed control motor or solenoid, EGR solenoid, A/C compressor clutch, fuel injectors, EVAP leak test, EVAP purge controls, etc.

This level of diagnostics requires a professional level ScanTool (which are EXPENSIVE!) with bidirectional (two-way) communication capability and the proper software for accessing and running these type of tests.
ScanTool have different ranges and capabilities. Entry level "generic" scan tools typically sell for less than $200. They can read and clear codes, display the status of the various OBD II system monitors, and display basic operating data such as loop status (Open or Closed), airflow, coolant temperature, oxygen sensor outputs, throttle position and other sensor readings, and fuel trim values for diagnostic purposes.

Helps you fix your car and helps keep repair costs down!

Most of these tools are fairly versatile and work on all domestic makes (Ford, GM & Chrysler), but may require additional software for Asian and/or European applications.

Entry level ScanTool that are sold in auto parts stores are usually designed for do-it-yourselfers, and lack bidirectional communications capability for liability reasons. They may also display only a limited number of "PIDs" (Performance Information Data such as sensor values, switch status and other operational data) compared to a professional level scan tool or factory scan tool.
